As the article says, it is the advent of computer system networking that allows employees to complete work in other remote departments without leaving their own desk that has proved on of the big advantages of insourcing. Rather than employ short term staff to manage difficult periods, you can do it with your own staff from a remote location.

Assuming of course your IT is robust enough!

@ Tony. I am not sure their is evidence that a happy workforce works faster, I might even be inclined to think the opposite. Having a happy workforce is crucial for many reasons though, and as the article above alludes to, it is even better if they can be a happy team rather than happy individuals.

The tip from that article that I can associate with is about having regular meetings. The advantages of insourcing include working with staff that you know, rather than sub contractors you do not. But what is the point of having this advantage, if you do not meet with these staff regularly and benefit from that close relationship?

Cross fertilization can reap huge rewards, if you can overcome/avoid insecurity and resentment. It is natural for the receiving department to feel a little insecure about intake from a different department, brought in specifically to revitalize or brain storm current practices and procedures.

A good manager will anticipate this negative potential and work with all staff to motivate them to see the positives from cross fertilization. This is a classic example of the advantages of insourcing.

Balancing workloads is very under appreciated by many managers, particularly if office environments. One of the advantages of insourcing is the ease of which staff can be moved to balance out peaks as described above. Failure to identify this need can lead to poor utilisation of resources and lower moral. Help staff get out of overload situations be reallocating from within, you retain full control, and balance is maintained.
